Summary on Grant Application Form |
Reinforced concrete marine structures undergoing wetting and drying are particularly vulnerable to chloride-induced corrosion and are very difficult to protect or repair. Although untried, if cathodic protection (CP) using a remote anode were effective, it would be an extremely economic solution; the CP current would only flow during the submerged part of the cycle, but there is strong evidence indicating that the protection would last for a significant period after the current was interrupted. The objectives of this research is to establish under what conditions intermittent CP is a viable method of protecting reinforced concrete structures and to develop design criteria for its application.A combination of literature review, modelling and laboratory experiments will be directed at examining chloride ion removal, passive film stability and cathodic control with a view to establishing their individual importance in different situations, ways in which they may be monitored, and how they may be harnessed in the design of an intermittent CP system.
