To develop a silicon based interconnect technology incorporating integrated silicon devices and/or GaAs dropins for mm-wave planar modules.Progress: The primary aim of this work programme is to create the microwave design and fabrication technology infrastructure required for the development of low cost consumer orientated planar mm circuits.To date a number of high resistivity silicon wafers have been patterned using aluminium metallization to form a variety of coplanar waveguide CPW circuits. These circuits include CPW open and short circuits, through lines and ring resonators. These structures have been designed specifically to be on-wafer probed in order to establish primary material parameters such as dielectric loss tangent, conductor conductivity etc.The test structures have been probed up to40 GHz and line losses of 0.5-2.5 dB/cm have been found over the frequency range 10 GHz through 40 GHz. A mathematical model for the computation of individual loss constituents has been developed.The results of preliminary investigations where recently reported as below.
