Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed work focuses on modelling the decomposition of austenite by the diffusional mechanism, in substitutionally alloyed steels. The approach involves the use of multiphase, multicomponent phase diagrams which are calculated using computer software which is available at Imperial College. Using the local equilibrium assumption, and appropriate diffusion equations, the motion of the austenite/ferrite interface can be predicted as a function of time. The particular aim of the proposed research is to quantify the so-called soft-impingement effect, so that the influence of austenite grain size on overall transformation kinetics can be taken into account. Two methods for this have been identified in this proposal; these methods will be implemented and the results compared during the course of the proposed research. The results will be disseminated in a learned journal. The most junior of the applicants (RCR) will benefit from continued collaboration with a world authority on diffusional phase transformations. In addition it is envisaged that the Visiting Fellow will be able to offer advice concerning two existing SERC grants in this area.
