Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work is to apply Neural networks to improve dynamic finite element models using vibration test data. Considerable importance is attached to this work by the users of finite elements as it aims to reduce life-cycle costs and the integrity of structures. The project will concentrate on the two main areas of interest in model reconciliation: location of errors and updating of finite element parameters. The programme of work required to achieve this as follows: to construct and model and measure the dynamic properties of a simple stepped beam; use the acquired data to train a Neural Network for this location of errors; compare the location results with those obtained using existing techniques; train a network using known parametric changes in the FE model using both model and frequency domain data; apply both the location and parametric networks to a two dimensional truss structure; and apply the developed techniques to British Aerospace's tail plane flutter model.
