Summary on Grant Application Form |
We shall investigate the optics of PDLC (Polymer Disperse Liquid Crystal) droplet systems. PDLC films are a new and promising technique for liquid crystal optical applications. In the project we shall set up an exact theory for light scattering by individual droplets of the Mie type. We shall use this theory to investigate the optical characteristics of droplets in the presence of a field. The theory will substantially improve current models which are essentially short wave, long wave or weak scattering approximations. We shall also extend the theory to deal with multiple scattering effects and droplet correlations, and also to PDLC systems involving cholesteric and smectic liquid crystals.
