Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for a magneto-calorimetric study of rare earth and actinide intermetallic compounds. In particular, I propose to study: (a) the effect on the quadrupolar transitions in UPd3 of low level [0.1% to 5%] impurity doping on the Pd site with Pt; (b) the effect on the superconducting Tc in URu2Si2 of low level [0.1% to 1%] impurity doping on the U site with La. Also the related compounds UNi2Si2 and UPdSi2; (c) the effect on the phase diagram of Nd of doping with small amounts of Th, Tb and Pr. The aim of the work is to use the calorimeter I have developed over the last 7 years to contribute to the study of ordering in magnetic alloy systems.
