The numerical predictions for dynamic geotechnical situations, which is reasonably straightforward to produce for sand masses under rather low amplitude shaking, becomes less simple in the presence of structures which apply surcharges to the soil and which tend to produce stress concentrations, and also when large amplitude shaking is applied. Further developments are required both in constitutive modelling (where the large deformation response of soil strained beyond failure is required) and in numerical analysis techniques, where computational efficiency implies that for reasonable time steps rather large stress increments may develop, which may pass significantly beyond the current yield surface. This project proposes development of constitutive modelling and numerical techniques to run in parallel with back analyses of existing data and data to be obtained under parallel research projects from centrifuge and shaking table tests on large amplitude dynamic soil-structure-interaction. This would enhance the understanding of these large amplitude horizontal shaking phenomena and provide further insight into the dynamic part of the standard suite of analyses required to check the safety of nuclear and other major installations, where current procedures are believed to be over-conservative in the assumed level of shaking that can be transferred from the soil to the structure.
