Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme to be undertaken covers two main areas: (i) determination of the optimum forging conditions using appropriately instrumented equipment. (ii) the relationship between the optimised conditions for obtaining accurate shape control and the resultant microstructure and properties of the blades. The first stage will be simplified by undertaking tests using ring-shaped test-pieces and flat dies. Rings have the advantage of indicating the general level of friction prevailing up to a given stage of deformation. Transient temperature changes will be monitored at various places in and on the surface of the rings during deformation, using thermocouples. Detailed microstructural examinations will be undertaken on both rings and blade forms so that the influence of forging conditions on microstructure is known. Results from these types of test will provide data for the FE simulation program. Material characteristics will be installed in the program, so that metallurgical structure can be predicted. The experimental work will initially be carried out on Ti6Al4V but the final stage will be to produce blades from TiAl-based alloy. In both cases the aim is to produce blades under conditions which minimise post forging shape change and optimise the final microstructure and properties.
