The project is addressing a major issue in systems development namely that the requirements for the system will change and evolve during the construction of the system. The project is examining the origins and consequences of the instability of requirements, together with existing and alternative process methods and models used in management of the problems involved. From this it is intended to abstract a set of criteria for assessing the suitability of various approaches to requirements engineering in dealing effectively with instability. Progress:Research has been conducted via a number of industrial case studies providing data for the conceptual work and also offering some opportunity to validate new methods proposed by the project. The project has also referenced a wider base via the organisation of a series of workshops to contribute additional ideas and experience, and to assist in validating the results of the research. Good progress has been made in indentifying the problems and opportunities of dealing with changing requirements. Several project deliverables have been produced and a number of academic papers published. A framework for explaining the relationship between the issues involved in change has been constructed, which is being used to focus further work on the specific issues identified as critical factors in dealing with change. An initial set of criteria for assessing the suitability of methods, tools, and processes in dealing with change has been developed and this will be extended during the remainder of the project. The opportunites and limitations for mechanistic reasoning about the consequences of change and the sensitivity to change of requirements and design decisions are also being explored, together with formal and semi- formal representational forms. Alternative requirements representation approaches which will facilitate change management are also being explored.
