Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme at ICSTM is increasingly toward 'enabling science', and is linked with many other laboratories - academic, government and industrial. We fabricate almost no mateials ourselves, but rather study, characterise, modify, and attempt to understand: HTS crystals, thin films, and conductors made by our collaborators. The substrates on which films are deposited are increasingly important, and we will continue to develop buffer layers. The critical current/flux pinning problem is crucial for conductors and also affects microwave losses in thin films; single crystal studies underpin this work. Ion implantation allows controllable, localisable and definable modification to the materials, and is used in several projects. High resolution electron microscopy and other structural characterisations, including cathodoluminescence, complement this work. We utilise the extensive local expertise in semiconductors to study the proximity effect at the semiconductor/superconductor (including LTS) interfaces, and possible eventual devices also we will continue to develop special Hall devices to probe superconductivity with enhanced spatial and temporal resolutions.
