Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme of work aims to contribute to knowledge in the field of reciprocating pumps and associated fluid systems by addressing the following areas of research: (1) The mathematical modelling of pressure pulsations in suction and delivery lines taking into account interactions between the pump and the circuit; particular emphasis will be placed upon the modelling of in-cylinder cavitation. The computer models will be refined and verified through supporting experimental investigations, including the use of flow visualisation in a single-cylinder mock-up and, if possible, in the cylinder of a working pump. (2) A theoretical and experimental study of the pressure transients generated inside pump cylinders under cavitating conditions with particular attention to the peak pressure generated on the collapse of vapour cavities. (3) An investigation of the significance and influence of suction line fluid dynamics on pump cavitation. (4) Identification of critical aspects of pump design and circuit configuration influencing the degree of cavitation.
