Summary on Grant Application Form
Synthetic equivalents of the cornea will be prepared using the natural cornea as a model and basing the strategy upon our experience with cartilage analogues. Key developments will be achievement of peripheral keratocyte ingrowth and superficial epithelial cell overgrowth in a prosthetic cornea on one hand, and a laser ablation rate equivalent to that of natural cornea in a corneal template for use in conjunction with excimer laser keratectomy in corneal reprofiling, on the other. The project involves close collaboration between biomaterials science, based on synthetic expertise and cell biology (which in collaboration with the materials development becomes tissue engineering). Strong clinical and manufacturing inputs ensure that the project has good long term viability.
