Summary on Grant Application Form
Welding is a critical step in the fabrication of large steam turbine generators and associated equipment. The welding alloys used currently cover a wide range of chemistries and are deposited using a variety of techniques and for many different joint designs. The purpose of this work is to develop for the first time, a computer model for the prediction of microstructure and mechanical properties of bainitic and martensitic alloys of the kind applied in the energy industry. This model will provide a design tool for the development of new kinds of materials in much shorter time scales and with lower development costs. The research will be based on sound principles of physical metallurgy so that it should be of lasting value and of general applicability. It will in addition contribute significantly to the understanding of the kinetics of transformations in welds, an area of major interest in the field of microstructure modelling.
