Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of the project is to design and develop a highly reliable food packing system using Molins' machinery, in the Brooke Bond end user environment, with Reading University's research input. This will be realised through the design of a new maintenance scheduling and condition monitoring system, ie a software package that interacts with the real-world machine condition data.Project results will be useful for a wide range of high speed, packaging and production machinery particularly that manufactured by Molins and that used by Brooke Bond Foods. However, the tea bag machinery will provide and ideal proving point test bed, both through demonstrator and actual production plant machinery. The research programme contains a number of key points: (i) design of a remote machine diagnosis system such that information can be extracted to support the required analysis and provide the operator with on-line diagnostic data; (ii) research into maintenance requirements and best maintenance plans, ie to decide when maintenance is required and what it should be; (iii) condition monitoring using learning system methods and cluster analysis; (iv) research into, and design of, an Expert Schelduler for Maintenance Scheduling (EMS).
