Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of this project is to study the influence of shield tunnel construction on the displacements and stresses induced in the linings of existing nearby tunnels. Laboratory scale model tests will be used to study this problem. The tests will be carried out in existing tanks; extensive modification of one of these tanks is needed before testing can proceed, however, studies will be carried out using normally consolidated and overconsolidated kaolin clay. Model tunnel linings will be constructed from plain steel tube; two linear specifications will be adopted, one corresponding to 'flexible' behaviour and the other to 'rigid' behaviour. Interactions between parallel and perpendicular tunnels will be investigated. A model tunnelling machine will be constructed and used to install the tunnels. A total of ten clay samples will be produced and each of these will be used to conduct two interaction tests using different tunnel spacings. During each test, measurements will be made of normal stresses at the tunnel/soil interface, changes in the shape of the tunnel cross-sections and strains in the tunnel liners. A two-dimensional finite element study will be used to investigate possible scaling errors and the likely effect of the boundary conditions used in the model tests on the quality of the results.
