Summary on Grant Application Form
The objectives of the LINK programme are to (i) demonstrate the feasibility of producing continuous single crystal complex oxide ceramic monofilament fibres in an economically viable manner at pilot-plant scale using the EFG fibre growth process; (ii) to develop polycrystalline oxide fibre materials used to produce multifilament fibres by a chemical sol-gel fibre spinning technology to the point where such fibres can be used at temperatures at least 200C above those at which current commercial fibres can be used, i.e., 1400C fibre capability; (iii) to understand and modify the high temperature property limiting processes in both types of fibre, using single crystal YAG, mullite and spinel fibres and polycrystal variants as the evaluation materials; (iv) to understand and model the EFG process so that it can be scaled-up to 50 monofilaments per module capability in order to provide the UK and Europe with a viable, independent ultrahigh temperature (1400C+) oxide ceramic production capability; (v) to do the same exercise for the sol-gel derived polycrystalline ceramic fibres; and (vi) to assess the performance of the two fibre types, individually and in combination, by incorporation into oxide/oxide CMCs and then evaluating the high temperature properties.
