For second harmonic generation it is necessary for the structure to be non-centrosymmetric, but to date very few optically non-linear dyes have been reported to form Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett films in which the interlayer packing is head-to-tail. However, from a preliminary study on twelve unconventional donor-(pi-bridge)-acceptor materials with hydrophobic groups at opposite ends of the chromophore non-centrosymmetric structures have been obtained in each case. Based upon this discovery the objective is to design transparent analogues with the aim of optimising the second harmonic generation of blue light from LB film waveguides.
