Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to carry out a systematic study of 3-substituted pyrroles and thiophenes with respect to the relation between monomer structure and polymer conductivity. We regard this as fundamental to the development of a highly conductive bioelectronic interface. The proposed program has two themes: first, the synthesis of 3-substituted pyrroles with peptide substituents of varying chain length. these are chosen because of the ability of amino acids to interface with biological molecules such as redox proteins or enzymes. Secondly, the synthesis of a homologous series of 3-(alkyl) substituted thiophenes. Thiophenes are known to form more ordered polymer structures and so these molecules may provide a means to investigate the influence of monomer structure on bulk polymer conformation and conductivity. The program of chemical synthesis will be carried out in the laboratory of Prof. Garnier, Thiais (Paris), whilst the electrochemical and polymer studies will be performed in the bioelectronics group of Dr. Copper at Glasgow.
