Summary on Grant Application Form
In upgrading old buildings it is often necessary to strengthen existing timber members in ways that do not show externally. Various methods of reinforcing are used but without the benefit of a scientific basis arising from research into the behaviour of such repaired members. Two methods of reinforcing beams by bonding reinforcement into slots or holes cut into the members using resin will be investigated. To date, steel has been used as a reinforcing material but it is intended to investigate the use of fibre composites as well. The project will include materials tests, interface bond tests, beam tests and theoretical studies. It is intended to produce a sound scientific basis for the design and specification of materials for such strengthening procedures.
