NMR spectroscopy is normally used to characterise stable compounds. I have recently demonstrated that it is possible to overcome the sensitivity problems associated with the examination of highly reactive inorganic and organometallic complexes by NMR spectroscopy. These studies utilised the parahydrogen phenomenon. We have already been able to observe the key intermediate RhH2[C1] [PPh3]2 [alkene] in alkene hydrogenation reactions catalysed by Wilkinsons complex using this effect. I am determined to develop this technique further by moving to the photochemical generation of reactive species, and high pressure systems. This requires the support of SERC. In this proposal I am seeking funding for [i] a triple resonance probe [ii] gradient spectroscopy unit [iii] 3 channel excitation facility [iv] off-line processing [v] vital technician support to build and develop the high pressure apparatus [vi] consumables support and [vii] an Earmarked Studentship. Chemical applications include : detection of new dihydride complexes, catalytic reactions, intermediate characterisation and the direct probing of activation mechanisms.
