It is proposed to study in detail a novel set of room temperature tandem solid-state rearrangement reactions of 1- and 2-acyl-3-aminopyrazoles which have been recently discovered in the applicants laboratory. First, an extensive survey of the scope of the reaction will be carried out by variation of the pyrazole and the acyl (or other) substituent.Next, the mechanism of the process will be studied, first of all by using a cross-over experiment to establish inter/intramolecularity, and secondly by using kinetics. Electronic effects will be probed by undertaking a Hammett study of a range of m- and p-phenylacetyl derivatives (which are known to undergo the reaction) and steric effects will be monitored by using substituents of similar o-value but different spacial requirements. Finally, it is hoped that a comprehensive study by X-ray crystallography of intermolecular interactions in examples both starting materials and product(s) will answer the question of why these reactions are so exceedingly facile.
