The motion of atomic and molecular particles under the influence of a potential energy surface is one of common and general interest in condensed matter science. In particular, the quantum mechanical aspects of the dynamics are of fundamental importance because the wave-like nature of the particles permits barrier penetration by tunnelling processes. This proposal is concerned with experimental investigations of the motion of hydrogen atoms in the hydrogen bond. Here the particles experience an asymmetric double minimum potential and incoherent tunnelling dominates at low temperature. To assist in the interpretation of the hydrogen bond data, some INS experiments will also be conducted on CH3 rotors where the dynamics are coherent tunnelling at low temperature.The techniques of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are complementary and so I propose a coordinated research programme involving both techniques.
