Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main thrust of the proposed research is to develop a suite of computer simulations for the rotational moulding of plastics. The main program will provide a full simulation of the conversion of plastic powder into a uniform melt and subsequently into a solid coating on the inside of a rotating mould. This simulation will provide data relating to all the key stages in the process, for example, oven time and cycle time as well as product wall thickness distribution. An additional computer program will be developed to illustrate the effects of different mould sitings on the rotating plate and arm. Throughout the research, special techniques will have to be developed to measure complex material data e.g. i) density changes and thermal properties of powders at all temperatures up to the melt and ii) oven heat transfer characteristics. The outcome of the work will be a computer simulation package similar to MOLDFLOW for injection moulding.
