Summary on Grant Application Form |
The search for fast response non-linear refractive materials for use in optical communications has to date produced little of interest from amongst the many types of organic material studied. One class of materials that has attracted attention has been organo-metallics where it was felt that low lying transitions involving metal to/from ligand charge transfer might offer the potential for large non-linearity In this proposal we consider two related classes of organo-metallic both of which have promise for large non-linear response. These are:1) transition metal dithiolenes and their nitrogen and oxygen containing analogues and2) a new series of bisdithiole cyanine like dyes.We will undertake a series of complementary measurements of UV-VIS-NIR absorption, degenerate four wave mixing, Z-scan, fs pump-probe spectroscopy, third harmonic generation, electroabsorption and non-resonant DC Kerr effect that will probe the linear and non-linear response of these materials over a wide range of wavelengths and on different time scales. The results thus obtained will provide considerable insight into mechanisms and should allow a clarification of the scope for optimisation of responses.
