Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme of research aims to undertake a series of laboratory studies, both on the SERC Flood Channel Facility at HR Limited, Wallingford and in a flume at the University of Sheffield, to elucidate the factors affecting the lateral dispersion of fine suspended sediment between the main channel and floodplains. In situ measurements of suspended sediment concentration distributions together with detailed turbulent velocity measurements will be performed to relate the observed sediment transport to the complex flow hydrodynamics. Two specific flow depths will be studied on the FCF whilst the flume at Sheffield will be used to observe the effects of heavily sediment laden flows on the turbulence levels and hence on the secondary flow distributions and mixing characteristics.
