Summary on Grant Application Form
The homogeneity of oil-in-water dispersions flowing in narrow tubes will be measured and modelled using a miniaturised 16-electrode on-line resistance imaging sensor. Sensor operation will be optimised based on physical electrical field simulation models and experimental measurements. Stacked time-sequenced images of individual dispersed and coalesced droplets (10 100um) will be obtained for an Orimulsion system, as a function of flow rate, formulation procedures and dispersed phase volume fraction. The homogeneity of the emulsion will be quantified using a mixing index calculated from the pixel-to-pixel values of conductivity in the image. The use of such a sensor to characterise and optimise the manufacture of emulsions would represent a radical improvement on current procedures.
