Summary on Grant Application Form |
Fluorination of aromatic rings is often difficult and is usually achieved by nucleophilic or electrophilic substitution. We have reported preliminary results on a mild, high yielding method of fluorinating aromatic rings and have produced evidence to show that this occurs via a radical mechanism. This method which can also be applied to non-aromatic molecules might be expected to be a useful addition to regioselective fluorination methodology and provide synthetic routes to molecules which are difficult to make by other methods. Our initial study involved treatment of aryltrimethylsilanes with xenon difluoride (which is readily available and does not require special apparatus). Our first priority is to explore the scope and limitations of this reaction. We then wish to apply the reaction to the synthesis of molecules of special structural and biological interest. The mechanism by which this reaction takes place may well provide the possibility of preparing stable arylxenon compounds and also polycyclic fluoro-derivatives derived by radical cyclisation. In addition to developing new synthetic routes our programme of work is also intended to lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms of reactions of hypervalent molecules and therefore assist in the discovery of other new and useful synthetic methods.
