Catalyst granules have to be constructed from powder formulation for use in practical chemical reactors. Apart from packing characteristics to achieve suitable bed voidage other essential requirements are adequate strength to withstand erosion, crushing and a large intrinsic surface area and pore structure. This grant application addresses a novel means of forming such particles in a continuous way with good strength and shape suitable for direct use of further processing. The concept of fluid bed granulation is used for the first time for catalyst manufacture but extended by incorporating a spout within the incipiently fluidised bed. In this way the problems of handling a sticky paste are overcome. The powders successfully agglomerate and particles of the required size can be continuously withdrawn from the spout. The concept has been validated in making a current ICI catalyst. It is now intended to work with other catalyst formulations including those of electrically conducted oxides. We believe that it would be a facility of considerable value to UK academics. Moreover the operation of the Catalyst Group alongside the Powder School in the Department at Bradford has all the requirements to achieve success in the aims and objectives of the programme. Volumetric heating will be incorporated into the experiments for subsequent catalytic calcination.
