Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to determine by experimental and computational studies, the conditions under which a uniaxially compacting suspension will phase separate in the production of a structured paste or gel. Experiments are to be designed to filter, flocculate, sediment, centrifuge, dry, and slip-cast idealised well-characterised suspensions which will enable an analysis of the extent of phase separations, and of heterogeneities in the paste. The experimental processes will attempt to approach well-defined steady states, thereby uniquely defining the states of the solid materials. The laboratory research at Keele will be carried out in collaboration with a computational modelling approach at Bradford which is already underway, and promises to yield insights into the reasons and mechanisms of the phase separation phenomena. The computer calculations will simulate hard soft and cohesive colloidal sphere particles by the methods of steady-state granular and Stokesian dynamics. A theoretical model will ensue leading to applications to materials production.
