This proposal is for a fundamental, multidisciplinary study of the mechanisms of failure of asphalt paving materials. The work will combine the expertise of four research groups in the Cambridge University Engineering Department: materials science, contact mechanics, soil mechanics and vehicle/road interaction; with the experimental capabilities and knowledge of bituminous materials of the Nottingham University Civil Engineering Department. Three full-time researchers and eight academic staff will be involved.The project will comprise two distinct sub-projects: one on permanent deformation and one on cracking damage. It will include: (i) a programme of laboratory measurements and modelling of the constitutive properties of asphalts; (ii) the testing of asphalt samples under simulated traffic conditions in the laboratory; and (iii) development of mathematical models of the damage mechanisms. Novel analysis methods, developed in related fields of materials science, will be used to investigate the behaviour of bitumens and asphalts from first principles.
