Summary on Grant Application Form
Design, production and test of adhesives and adhered structures are all hampered by a limited knowledge of their mechanical properties, their dependence on evolving structure during cure, and on the cure temperature-time cycle. Mechanical performance of adhesives and other polymers (particularly in thin films) during high temperature cycling is not well understood. This is due to the lack of instrumentation to measure mechanical properties of these materials in thin films (50mm to 2mm), between substrates, and at elevated temperatures during cure and service conditions. The aim of this project is to build an advanced measuring rig for laser generation of ultrasonic waves in an adhesive or other polymer bond mounted in a furnace whose temperature-time characteristics can be controlled by a computer, which also analyses the received ultrasound signals to give Young's and sheer moduli simultaneously and nondestructively during cure, and as functions of temperature after cure. The results will be integrated with measures of structure obtained by means of X-rays and DSC in a parallel programme. (GR/J/01950). The results will bring greater understanding of the way in which the cure processes affects both structure and final properties, and will clarify the effects of temperature cycling in service. This will aid adhesive 'design'.
