This project concerns the wear performance of surface engineered materials. The problem is being tackled by using a mechanics approach and relating wear performance to surface engineering and topography. Surface engineering processes have been characterised by the ratio of surface to core hardness, shape of the hardness profile and depth of the hardened layer. Surface topography affects the performance by changing the contact patch size and contact pressure at the asperity level; it is the ratio of the depth of the hardened layer to the contact width that governs the wear performance. It is expected that by using this analysis a design engineer can choose a combination of surface topography and hardness profile for a prescribed wear performance. The necessary hardness profile may in turn be used by a materials scientist as a target for deciding the appropriate surface engineering process for the design component.
