This proposal aims to replace (at modest expense) the present 2D-ACAR Anger Cameras on loan from ENEA, Italy with a new detection system. The objectives of the current research programme are to conduct angular correlation (2D-ACAR) measurements in a variety of heavy fermion and transition metal and alloy systems. The heavy fermion experiments envisaged include the study of: (i) the Fermi surface topologies of CeB6 and CeCu6 at a range of temperatures in both the normal and heavy fermion state. (ii) The Fermi surface of the alloy CexLa1-xCu6 and the evolution of the Fermi surface from the normal metal LaCu6 to the heavy fermion CeCu6. (iii) The Fermi surface of the UPt3-xPdx alloy. The scope of this research will provide a valuable insight into the properties of heavy fermion compounds in conditions not normally accessible by traditional quantum oscillatory techniques. In addition, it is proposed to quantitatively measure the Fermi surface dimensions and the associated nesting vectors in Cr, V, Mo and CrxV1-x and CrxMo1-x alloys; the ultimate aim being the comparison of positron annihilation data with exchange coupling oscillations observed in magnetic multilayers separated by transition metal spacers.
