Summary on Grant Application Form |
We aim to synthesise a wide range of metal-containing side chain liquid crystal polymers (SCLCPs) using a novel synthetic procedure which allows us to prepare metal-containing SCLCPs free from the problems of cross-linking. We have observed a number of novel low temperature magnetic effects in similar monomers, including ferromagnetic alignment and a paramegnetic to diamagnetic cross-over in oxavanadium (IV) complexes. These are believed to be new phenomena in liquid-crystalline systems. In order to make these materials more processible, we seek to combine the unique properties of the monomers with the robustness of polymers. This is a joint research proposal with the Department of Physics, University of Manchester who will full investigate the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of the monomers and polymers. As this is a new field of investigation, both with respect to metal-containing liquid crystals and SCLCP systems, most of the science will be at a fundamental level although we aim to produce electro- and magneto-optic demonstration devices in the course of the studies.
