Electrostatic precipitation is a widely used method of preventing particulates being discharged to the atmosphere. The discharge electrodes in a precipitator produce a corona in which ionised species are produced. These are captured by the particles which thus become charged and move under the influence of the electrostatic field to impinge on the collector electrodes and be removed from the gas stream. We proposed to investigate the ionic species present in the corona by observing their spectra through fibre optic probes. The proposal is thus a study of the fundamental physics of the charging process which will have a significant impact on the design of the discharge electrodes for improve particle charging and overall collection efficiency.
