|
The fallibility of human memory is a hidden tax on us all. During our daily work we come across lots of snippets of information that may be useful later; however, even if we recorded them we would be unlikely to be able to find them when needed.Mobile computers, supported by wireless networks, offer a platform for tackling these memory problems. A lot of data about the working environment can be captured automatically, and this can be augmented by actively capturing data and marking it with simple annotations. The annotations can be made by means of a gesture on the touch-screen of the portable computer. The overall result of the data capture is an electronic biographical diary. Retrieval from the diary can be achieved using the relevant threads-model with annotations as filters.The programme involves building software to create a memory repository, with data capture and retrieval systems. The software will then be evaluated as a practical aid to personal memory. The programme is in collaboration with Rank Xerox, who have great technical expertise in this area, covering not only the computing aspects but also the psychology and personal privacy aspects.
