Summary on Grant Application Form
The development of NEC unearthed a number of complex issues of risk allocation and management on which the advice of experts from the legal, insurance and project management professions was in conflict. In addition some options for risk allocation were considered but not adopted because a consensus was not reached on their implications. The aim of this research is to analyse these options in depth and to develop risk allocation models which are relevant for practical use. Descriptive models will be produced from a database of NEC documents which are in the possession of the Principal Applicant. Interviews with specialist professionals and experienced contract practitioners will assess the practicability of the risk options in terms of legal and insurance business practice and also their implications for project management. Liaison with the NEC Panel, of which the Principal Applicant is a member, will be maintained throughout the period of the research and the findings will be used to inform the future development of NEC as well as being relevant to other contract forms and project management practice.
