Summary on Grant Application Form
The range of metallomesgens, hitherto largely restricted to copper (ii) and nickel (II) in square-planar co-ordination, will be greatly extended to include a variety of metals in different geometries. Luminescence will be introduced as a new probe of liquid crystal behaviour (as a possible basis for new devices) in europium complexes with mesogenic ligands. New ligands based on the trispyrazolylborate anion will be synthesised and used to prepare octahedral metallomesogens; for iron (II), where spin-crossover behaviour can be expected, the focus will be on the interaction between spin-state and mesophase equilibria. A series of binuclear mesogens based on aldimines will be synthesised to investigate how geometry changes induced by mesophase formation affect magnetic coupling between the metal ions. Novel mesogenic complexes based on seven-membered (tropolone) and five-membered (pyrrole, pyrazole) ring systems will be synthesised. For all complexes, as well as structural and phase characterisation, extensive exploration of their magnetic properties will be made and correlated with phase behaviour.
