This project will compare bubbly flows of air/water and steam/water of similar void fraction. Theoretical analysis and experimental observation indicate that there are considerable difference in the dynamic response to pressure gradients in bubbly conditions which may profoundly affect drag coefficients and pressure losses in process equipment. The research will provide quantitative comparisons of drag coefficients and pipeline pressure drops for these different classes of two phase flow. This validation is urgently needed in view of the widespread use of low temperature simulations for vapour liquid process conditions. The experimental programme will use a two phase loop in which flow and pressure changes can be studied in chosen geometries. Detailed information on local voidage changes within the flowing system are expected to provide the key to the fundamental analysis and the probability of successful quantitative application of the results.
