Summary on Grant Application Form |
During the past year we began an investigation of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the mixed state of superconductors with the aid of a grant from the NCS (GR/H62589). The initial results have been very exciting: we have observed dHvA oscillations in five systems, in some cases in applied magnetic fields as low as 0.5 Bc2. We now propose to continue and complete our investigations. So far our measurements have been confined to fixed orientation and very low temperatures.(T << Tc). In the compounds where we have already observed signals, we will extend our measurements to higher temperatures and make studies as a function of orientation. These compounds include V3Si, Nb3Sn, the layered compound 2H-NbSe2, super-conducting molecular metals such as k-(ET)2Cu)NCS)2. Further, we will investigate new compounds which show anomalous or novel superconducting properties (e.g. high-Tc materials, HfV2). Simultaneously, we plan to develop a quantitative interpretation of the measurements through detailed comparison with theory so that quantum oscillations can be used and a powerful probe of the nature of the electron excitations in the mixed state and the variation of the gap function over the Fermi surface.
