Summary on Grant Application Form |
Synthetic structures displaying photonic band gaps in 1 and 2 dimensions will be fabricated by control of sample geometry rather than control of material properties. This will allow structures exhibiting photonic band gaps in the visible wavelength range to be fabricated with greater ease than the standard route involved in forming 3 dimensional photonic band gap structures. We propose to use this geometric fabrication route to study a new and largely unexplored area, that of photonic band gap structures that also support optical waveguide and surface modes. A whole range of new phenomena are anticipated, due to the enhanced interaction between these confined optical modes and the material in the photonic band gap regime. The control of optical properties by designing such structures may thus be dramatic and has application to laser gain media, nonlinear optical phenomena, localisation of light etc. The research will be primarily experimental in nature and will involve the fabrication and characterisation of suitable structures.
