Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to perform computer simulation studies of liquid crystals in confined geometries. This area, which is just becoming accessible to the simulation community, is of considerable technological interest due to its relevance to liquid crystal device applications. We wish to study two specific problems in this work: the behaviour of liquid crystals in randomly interconnected porous media and the orientational order adopted by molecules at a liquid crystal - solid interface. Our investigations will be based on relatively simple models, the aim being to ascertain the general properties of these systems and make contact with theories of the same models.
