Summary on Grant Application Form |
A novel genus of flexible flame and heat barrier textiles which resist short term (>10 minute exposures up to 1200C has been developed. Their performance is determined by the char-forming fibres present chemically and physically interacting with a compatible intumescent present. The exact nature of this interaction is not understood. This proposal will elucidate the mechanisms occurring in the currently patented system based on flame retarded hybrid viscose fibres and phosphate/melamine/pentaerythritol intumescents. The unique behaviour of the resulting char structure will also be more fully determined. The wider dependence of fibre-intumescent interactions on individual component variables and their influence on the char-bonded structure will be correlated. Thus a more full understanding and realisation of the potential of these novel fibre - intumescent systems may be effected.
