Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme consists of a theoretical analysis and simulation study of a non-linear signal processing structure which has been recently suggested by the applicant. The structure consists of a signal-independent non-polynomial orthonormal expansion followed by a signal-dependent normalisation stage and linear combiner. The orthonormal expansion plus the normalisation together form a set of Wiener functions. Although the normalisation requires knowledge of the probability density function (p.d.f.) associated with the input signal, the structure also provides an indirect but convenient mechanism of estimating that p.d.f. through the characteristics function. Particular applications of interest are signal prediction, line enhancement and noise cancellation. The second stage of the study will extend the concepts to accommodate signals whose p.d.f. is fractal in nature. This will involve non-linear basis functions with self-similarity properties. The final stage of the project will be an assessment of the architecture with regard to hardware implementation - this will be a systems level study rather than a detailed design.
