Summary on Grant Application Form
An investigation of the correlation between processing parameters, fired ceramic microstructure and mechanical properties of electrolyte materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC's) which are based on ceria, singly doped with samaria or doubly doped with samaria plus small additions of (typically) praseodymium oxide. Specimens will be prepared by plastic forming of the green ceramic body to give bulk and thin-platefilms. Density measurements, phase analysis by XRD and microstructural analysis by SEM and TEM will be used to characterise the fired ceramics. Bulk specimens will be machined to provide samples for uniaxial four-point flexure testing between ambient and 1000oC to provide fracture strengths and fracture toughness (by SENB). Thin-plate specimens will be tested in biaxial flexure at room temperature, 500oC and 1000oC to determine fast fracture strengths and delayed fracture behaviour. Results from mechanical testing will be used to optimise the processing parameters and also investigate the fracture processes for these ceramics. Data collected during this project will be applied to the design of fabrication and mechanical testing techniques for monolithic electrode/doped ceria electrolyte/electrode assemblies for SOFC's suitable for large or small scale electricity supply and /or vehicle propulsion.
