Summary on Grant Application Form
the shear capacity of concrete beams and slabs depends on adequate anchorage of the main longitudinal reinforcement. In the design of new construction this is ensured by satisfying simple rules-of-thumb. In the assessment of the capacity of existing bridges similar rules-of-thumb have been put forward. However some bridges have been found not to comply and in these cases there is an absence of guidance by which designers can assess a reduced shear capacity. This proposal aims to provide a design method which will allow the calculation of the shear capacity of a concrete member with any anchorage length or detail. This will produce economies by eliminating unnecessary replacement and strengthening of bridges or load restrictions.
