Summary on Grant Application Form
The ultimate aim of this proposal is to design and make flexible polymers whose main chains can only adopt one of a chosen set of conformations, through the incorporation of conformational locks. We shall study the case of (R2CXYZ) polymers where X,Y, and Z and either CH2 groups or hetero- atoms which are more or less equivalent in size and have similar bond lengths, eg oxygen. Monomers for this type of polymer will include (i) 3,3-disubstituted cyclobutenes for ROMP, (ii) substituted oxetanes for Lewis acid-promoted polymerisation, and (iii) certain compounds which can form polyacetals with appropriate conformational properties. Possible methods for preparing poly(1-oxobutylene) will be studied. All the polymers will be subjected to physical studies to define their properties and structures.
