Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this programme we propose to investigate macroscopic quantum phenomena in ultra small capacitance niobium microbridge, tunnel junction and point contact weak link SQUID rings. We intend to probe transitions between low lying energy levels by direct frequency shift techniques. Both induced (stimulated) and, apparently, spontaneous transitions have already been observed between the ground (K=0) and first excited state (K=1) levels. We are interested in the distribution of lifetimes in the K=1 state and the evolution between K=1 and 0 states, which will be one focus of the programme. We also intend to explore higher excited states which, given more controlled circuit parameterisation (weak link capacitance and critical current) should allow more precise comparisons with computing energy bands. Susceptibility studies of the K=1 state will also be a focus of interest since, theoretically X1(Phi x) can be <-1 at applied flux. This is of great fundamental interest since thermodynamically (following the second law) this should not be an accessible state. We will also expect to continue our work on the high frequency dynamics (derived from SQUID magnetometry) of quantum SQUID rings since these also provide quantitative information on low lying SQUID states.
