The purpose of this proposal is to acquire funds to develop what is now a successful and rapidly expanding research programme on the interaction between single quantum objects (weak link circuits) and classical measurement circuits. This is an area which we consider is very topical, given that quantum circuits, both superconducting and semiconducting, are now being developed. In both, the interface between the quantum and classical worlds is of paramount importance. Our particular interest is in various quantum superconducting weak link circuits coupled to external (classical) resonator circuits. We intend to study in great detail the expression of the quantum evolution in the weak link circuit as made manifest in the nonlinear modifications of the response of the driven resonator circuit. Our research has already demonstrated that the generated nonlinear behaviour is very rich indeed, sufficient, in fact, to constitute a class of systems for the study nonlinear dynamics, apart from providing theoretically manageable and experimentally testable systems for the investigation of the measurement problem in quantum mechanics. It is the effect of the macroscopic quantum object (circuit) on the classical circuit, leading to nonlinear behaviour in the otherwise linear oscillator, which makes these systems quite unique and so interesting to study.
