Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will be a combination of instrument development work and fundamental scientific research. We plan a substantial upgrade to the polarised neutron capability of the CRISP reflectometer in order to achieve greater spatial resolution and depth sensitivity in studies of surface magnetism and superconductivity. We will: a) implement full polarisation analysis with improved spin polarisers and flippers; b) develop new software to optimise measuring time, incorporate polarisation analysis and allow use of off-specular reflection; c) commission new 3He cryostat to access temperatures down to 0.3K. These improvements will enable us to undertake a fundamental study of magnetic field penetration effects in superconductors. We plan to study non-local effects and surface superconductivity in low K materials, make definitive measurements of penetration depths in novel superconducting materials (eg high and heavy fermion superconductors) and investigate the effects of dimensionality and interlayer coupling in superconducting multilayers. The measurements will all have strong relevance to current theoretical ideas in superconductivity.
